Product Recalls Fall in 2014

Product recalls are a complex and costly type of incident for firms to manage, and recent high-profile cases such as Toyota have created the perception that they are a growing problem.  So it is good to report that, at least in two specific industry sectors, there appears to have been a significant fall in recalls in the last year.  The graph below shows the number of recalls in the UK for food products and drugs over the last six years; as can be seen, after five years of minor ups and downs, there was a significant decrease in recalls in both categories in 2014.

It is not clear whether this trend will persist (we will be watching with interest); nor is it clear what could have caused such a reduction: any views on this would be much appreciated.
