What does this mean for my business?
Whilst it is unlikely that this would have been a major concern for many business, this does demonstrate the difficulties in a reliance on technology, and the need for alternate routes/suppliers and/or manual workarounds.
A Business Impact Analysis would identify critical activities and the resources required to achieve those activities. It would also identify areas at risk, such as those that are dependent on a key supplier, or those that are dependent on technology. Finally, the assessment would highlight where there is no manual workaround that has been tested, exercised and kept up-to-date. It is vital that any such workarounds are maintained and updated as part of any system upgrade or change in system functionality.
