Janet hit by Distributed Denial of Service Attack

Janet, the network responsible for running the .ac.uk and .gov.uk domains, was the subject of a sustained distributed denial of service attack, over the period 7/8th December.  The most obvious effect of this was that the websites of many UK universities, and a number of local councils, were unavailable or slowed down significantly.  It also meant that many students could not access the internet and, as a result, some were unable to complete assignments.  It would appear that services have now returned to normal, but it should be remembered that denial of service is sometimes part of a broader cyber attack, as was the case with the data breach at TalkTalk in October.
